Have you ever wondered how to create beautiful, illustrative infographics? We want to show you exactly how!

Infographics are graphically visual representations of data or knowledge. Many businesses use them to explain their products or services in a creative way. To help you come up with a plan for your next infographic, we’ve listed out eight steps to get you started:

Choose Content Relevant to Your Industry

List out a few options to work through. Look at industry sites or peruse the list of questions people ask about your industry on Quora. You’ll get a good idea of a few interesting topics that are valuable to your target audience.

Pick One Topic of Focus and Start Your Research

If you find it difficult to conduct your own research (which requires survey tools like Survey Monkey or Google Surveys), scour the Internet for data and statistics related to your topic. It takes a bit of work, but once you find reliable studies and articles, you can gather enough data to start your infographic.

Compile Your Data Into an Easy-to-Follow Outline

Assemble your data in an outline as if you were telling a story. It’s important to remember that although infographics are graphical representations of the data you could easily read about in an article, they still have a basic structure. Think about how you would present this data if it were in an article then cut out all the unnecessary copy. What you’ll have left are the headings, brief descriptions, labels/captions for graphs and tables, and most importantly, the data itself.

Choose an Exciting Graphical Theme

This is where you have the option of using your creativity. Effective infographics have beautiful illustrations or graphics that relate to the topic at hand. Take some time to come up with concrete ideas for your background, color palettes, font selections, icons, graphs, and charts.

Wireframe It!

Whether you call it a wireframe or sketch, make sure you know where your information will be placed on the infographic. How are things going to be arranged? Is everything spaced out correctly? This step is especially important if you don’t have the budget for a designer.

Design Away!

Adobe Creative Suite is a great tool for creating beautiful infographics. If you’re more of a design novice and want an easier approach to creating your first infographic, we suggest checking out Piktochart, which is an easy-to-use online tool.

Post on Your Blog or Website

We suggest labeling your infographic with an <alt> tag that includes the appropriate keywords for the graphic. We also recommend that search engines encounter your infographic on a web property that you specifically own. Posting the original infographic on your website, blog, and social media with the appropriate search terms will help bring more visitors to your site. By also including an embed code underneath your infographic, visitors will be able to embed the infographic on their own sites with a link pointing back to yours.

Post on Other Sites!

You can also submit your infographic to related industry blogs, media sites, and on social media sites such as Pinterest. Always remember to include your URL on the infographic post so that if other sites don’t link back to yours, there’s still a way for someone to find a source to the graphic. You can also repost it from time to time when it’s relevant.
